KCAA EXHIBIT AT PINE CENTER FOR THE ARTS

KCAA members will have their work on display at Pine Center for the Arts, 265 5th St. in Pine City during the month of September. Call the center for dates and times 320-629-4924 or check the website www.pinecenter.org.

Thirty one art pieces, created by 21 different members, will be on display. Mediums include: oil, acrylic, watercolor, fiber, photography, ceramics and clay.

Open House will be Friday, September 9 from 6 to 7:30 pm. Come for refreshments, view the art and talk to some of the artists.

The exhibit will be included in the fall art crawl on September 17 and 18. Hours are from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, the 17th and 11am to 4pm on Sunday, the 18th. Check the Pine Center for the Arts website for more details.

The workshop was really wonderful. Jeanne Carbonetti is a fabulous teacher. We all learned a lot from her lectures, demonstrations and one-on-one consultations.

Jeanne taught figure painting techniques on the last day of class

I was glad to learn how to use washes to help direct/correct my compositions. I also loved the strong, bold Holbein watercolor pallette she had us use. It was a stretch for me not having my favorite colors to fall back on, but the pallette we used was brilliant. Here are some photos of works in progress...

We are having a wonderful time learning about art and watercolor painting from Jeanne Carbonetti this week!

The class is being held in the historic Coin country school house, complete with blackboards, coat hooks, and hardwood floors. Twenty six students are painting like mad in the west room each afternoon...

and listening to Jeanne's lectures and demonstrations each morning in the east room...

Of course we MUST take time out for treats too.

Tomorrow is already our last day. It promises to be as rich a learning experience as the past two days -- we will be working with the figure!

Soon I'll post photos of some of the work created in class. Several participants will have work created in this class on display at the Kanabec History Center this summer.

Jeanne Carbonetti Workshop coming up THIS WEEK!

There are 26 artists signed up for the Jeanne Carbonetti painting workshop to be held in Mora May 19-21. The workshop is the result of three years of planning and patience by members of the Kanabec County Art Association.

It all started back in the spring of 2008 when members of the KCAA’s Monday morning art group became enthralled with Carbonetti’s book, “The Tao of Watercolor.” Several members bought the book and borrowed it out to other members. Enthusiasm grew and thoughts of, “wouldn’t it be great to study with Jeanne Carbonetti?” began to surface.

That's when I checked Carbonetti’s Crowhill Gallery web site and inquired about about the possibility of having Jeanne teach a class in Mora, MN. Fortunately she agreed to make the trek from Vermont to Minnesota. The only problem was that her teaching schedule was booked up for three years. Three years! It seemed like an eternity, but arrangements were made for a class to be held in May, 2011 and the waiting began.

Grant support from the East Central Regional Development Commission and the East Central Arts Council with funds appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature allowed the workshop to be affordably priced for area artists. To many of the artists participating this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from a master artist. Reservations were accepted from artists residing in the five county area served by the ECAC: Kanabec, Pine, Chisago, Isanti, and Mille Lacs. On January 1st, 2011, the remaining class openings were made available to artists from outside of the area. The class spaces quickly filled and a waiting list was established.

The class will be held in the historic Coin School on the grounds of the Kanabec History Center in Mora, MN.

Several class participants will share their completed works in an art show at the Kanabec History Center from July 1st through the end of August.

Arts opportunities in the AREA!

There are some art opportunities I would like to share with the group today. If any of you that were at the last two Sticks and Stones concerts saw Brian Wicklund and the Barley Jacks you know you saw some world class entertainment. He will be doing a show with his band on Friday April 15th at the Lighthouse in Pine City. Tickets are available at Pine Center for the Arts, and I can get them too if you contact me before Tuesday. The tickets are selling fast, and may be sold out soon.

Paul Morris and Bill Gossman are giving a workshop in New London , MN on May 12th and 13th, click on the links for more details.

Vasaloppet Art Show Entry Deadline is Feb. 1st

Time is running out to get your Vasaloppet Art Show entry filled out and mailed in! Entries should be postmarked by February 1st, 2011.

Entry forms are available at the Oak Gallery in Mora and Cambridge, Made of Mora and the East Central Arts Council office in Mora.

Artists, 18 and over can enter up to four original works plus one Vasaloppet-related piece. Painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, fiber art, jewelry and more will be on display. For more information, call Deb at 320-679-1809.

Award winning watercolor artist, Pat Undis will be our Gallery Tour guide on Friday evening, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. David Waid will do a silversmithing demo on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. and Becky Utecht will do a felting demo on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.

Morris Pottery opening at Pine Center for the Arts

It was a cold weekend for our last firing of the year, but we wanted to have a fresh batch of items for our gallery show at Pine Center for the Arts this month. Our opening is from 7 to 9 Friday Dec 10th.

This December Paul and I celebrate 28 years working together, so I was glad when we got this show to mark our milestone.

Many of you will remember Le Ann as the guest speaker at Vassaloppet, and image art shows in the past years, and to me she is my longtime colleage, a friendship forged 33 years ago in college. The cover photo for the article was in the State Fair art show in 2009.

Paul and I are busy getting ready for our own holiday pottery sale at the Kanabec History Center featuring Charlie Roth with his one man band who is a perennial favorite at the Sticks and Stones events, will be performing Sat afternoon Nov 20th. This coincides with the third Saturday jam session which will meet at the regular time on Saturday evening at 7 pm. Coffee and goodies are served, and pottery will be available for sale all day.

"Painting From the Heart" Workshop - May 19-21, 2011

The Kanabec County Art Association is happy to announce that renowned Vermont watercolor artist and author, Jeanne Carbonetti, will be coming all the way to Mora, MN next spring to teach “Painting from the Heart” May 19-21, 2011 at the Kanabec History Center. This class is an overview of all five of her books and promises to increase creativity and overall satisfaction with creating art. Participants in the class are free to use their preferred painting medium, but watercolor is Ms. Carbonetti’s specialty. Class will be held in the historic Coin School on the History Center grounds and run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day with a one hour lunch break.

But class space is limited and spots are being offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Sticks and Stones this weekend

I'll be there and the public is invited to join me in making felt for a community rug. Felting sessions will take place from noon to 2:30 and 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25th and from noon to 3:00 on Sunday.

The weather forecast looks good for doing a rug stump in a kiddie pool, but I will also have the option of felting in ziplock bags for those who don't want to get their feet wet. Participants can even make themselves a felt pin to wear proudly on FeltUnited Day, October 2nd, 2010.

Which brings me to another event I want you to remind you of -- my FeltUnited Fiber Art Exhibit at Made of Mora on Saturday, October 2, 2010, from noon to 4:00 p.m. This is where the completed community rug, made from the prefelts created by participants at Sticks and Stones, will be unveiled.

In keeping with the spirit of FeltUnited, I will have my recent felt pieces on display and I'm inviting other felters to join me in displaying their felt creations too. The colorway for FeltUnited this year is yellow-green-blue, let me know if you've got something in that colorway to display and I'll reserve a space for it. Felters are invited to wear their felt creations too. We'll take photos to submit to the official FeltUnited website for inclusion with photos of other events taking place around the world on that day.

Becky Utecht presenting Community Felting at sticks and stones

I attended a felting workshop in Duluth in the nineties. I , and the gals that went with me fell in love with the process. We wore our hats home that night, and all the way home from the workshop we drank Lattes and dreamed up projects that you could create with this ancient process , and I did some tooling up after that, but as they say life got in the way, and I never got my hands in it again. I am so excited to find out that Becky will be demonstrating her techniques at the festival this year. I hope Becky will pop into the blog and tell us a little about what to expect at the demos on Saturday.

For those unfamiliar with Becky, she has been an active member of KCAA all the years I have known her! When she tackles a new medium, it is never dabbling. In the early years, her pastels paintings with their striking portrayal of light were her focus, When she was raising chickens, she learned the ancient art of pysanky, or Ukranian egg decorating. Not only learned it, but studied it , and achieved mastery of that medium. Was it the chicken or the egg that came first?

In the same way, the felting is an extension of the sheep that Becky raises. Over the last several years, she has developed a high quality herd of wool bearing sheep, and has studied extensively all of the processes from shearing to spinning dyeing, and all of the possible uses for the high quality product that results. Some where in the mix, there are some very fine handmade soaps in Becky's multufaceted line of creations.

Now the term "master" gets thrown around a lot, and there are many definitions of mastering ones craft. An academic version of such is to earn the credits from an institution that will give you a master title after your name, and there is the kind of master that puts in the time and research and practice it takes to achieve the skills, and once one achieves the skill level with that medium, they are able to express themselves and that is where the artist comes in. In this age of instant gratification, the mindset is rare for a person to learn a skill from the ground up and spend the years it takes to satisfy merely the artist in one's self before actually presenting works in public!!

Becky has done that too, with much success. When I see the beautiful compositions that Becky has created with her felting, I am reminded of those first pastels I saw of the geese and the chickens, and I see the same sensitive treatment to light and composition in the felting. In other words Becky has mastered her crafts, all of them, to artistic levels and her collection of awards and achievements speak for that. I just saw on her blog

August is almost over, and the harvest is on! People offer zucchinis after every visit. I hastily grab the pink tomatoes before the chipmunks and chickens can defile them. As I work on my projects for my next show I enjoy the cool feel of the clay when I first grab it out of the bag. Last night I pinched out twenty bell ornaments before bedtime. I have never done Christmas stuff ahead of time although I think of it every year. A new slab roller is egging me on.

Of course I have been working hard preparing for the Sticks and Stones festival, and am very excited to see it come together. I have the brochures, now, and so does Carl if you need any to hand out or mail. This is going to be the best one yet, and as we were working on the mailing this week we were discussing the need for volunteers. There is a tremendous amount of work involved in putting on the show, and it is by the grace of a huge volunteer squad over the years that we have been able to accomplish this. If anyone wishes to help out this year, contact me, Carl, Kathy, or Dee,, and we will find a place for you. Besides the good food , you get a free T shirt!

Don't forget that the third Saturday jam goes on year round. Tonight is the night if you want some free entertainment and a nice sociable crowd, with goodies and coffee.

Getting ready for Sticks and Stones

We had a great day for a parade in Mora during Fair week. We went with a fairly simple theme this year, but Kathy went whole hog with the fabulous butterfly costume she created. The crowd loved the big butterflies almost as much as our marchers loved carrying them and interacting with the audience.
If any KCAA members would like fliers they will be ready soon. Over the years we have used many forms of advertising, and the most effective, in my opinion, is word of mouth. We have spent another year getting ready for this one and it is going to be the best one yet, with story telling, clogging, and some really great bands. I look forward to seeing everybody at the show. I can't believe it is just less than two months away!

What a summer!

Can you beat this great Minnesota weather? The right amount of rain to bring us back from the drought, and now these beautiful summer sunny days! This weekend looks good for those doing art fairs.   How many of you are taking workshops this summer?

I returned last week from fiddle camp and am so jazzed about my music right now.   It is very important in any area of the arts to take yourself away and challenge, renew, refresh your creative spirit.

I was thinking today , how the artists, and the craftspeople are the last strong hold out on buying American made goods.   The thriving marketplace on sites like Etsy should prove that there is a customer base that cares where and how their purchases are produced. Of course we have found a market for our work long before the internet, there have always been aficionados of the unique, one of a kind item.    Many of the established art fairs around the country are approaching their fiftieth years!
Our electronics, our appliances, clothing, shoes, I think it would be hard to find any that are still produced in the United States.   Yet, people still endeavor to create their own things and sell them in this vast worldwide market place. The craftspeople today are producing items that will stand out in future generations as "different, and unique" compared to the mass produced plastics that will be filling the landfills, the hand of the artist/craftsperson can be "felt" in an image or utilitarian vessel.

We have many choices to make these days of how to spend our money.   I always feel good about buying handmade, Recently I purchased a lovely handbag. When I look at this purse I am struck by the attention to detail that the maker had with the deep inner pockets, and I know by purchasing from an artisan my money is going straight back into the economy and the artist is getting their fair share of the profit.   There are many great shops in our area that feature the work of artists of all media in Mora and the surrounding area, be sure to check them out when you are in town, and see what the talented people in our area are doing.   A quick search on the internet will provide quite a variety of inspirational art work and handcrafts.

Barb Dreyer Show at Pine City

I attended the opening of Barb Dreyer's new work at the Pine City Center for the Arts I took my camera, but the batteries failed me. The space is lovely and lent itself to Barb's new pieces very well. The spontaneity of the soda firing technique provided a wide variety of colors ranging from rich brown leather like textures, to very juicy looking pale pieces, and they were displayed beautifully, in the gallery space.

I was very impressed by the large turnout, and also very happy to meet another segment of the art community that seems like a very enthusiastic and active group. It was great getting out for the evening and seeing friends, neighbors, and meeting some new folks too! Barb's work will be on display for the rest of the Month, from what I understand, and look for new openings at the art center every second Friday of the Month!

Hello KCAA Newsletter!

Hello to my friends in the association, and to those I have yet to meet! I will be attending the meeting Monday, and look forward to getting my toe in the water again.

Since I have permission to blog here, I thought I would take the opportunity to do just that.   I like the idea of a place where the artists can pop in and share. I like the idea of not actually writing in my own blog. It seems easier to come in here and chat to a group of which I have some faces to connect to, at least to get started.
For those who aren't familiar with me, I am Denise Morris, of Morris Pottery, Ogilvie , MN.   Paul and I settled here in 1984 to build our pottery and live close to nature. I like to say settled because it brings to mind our pioneer ancestors, and our journey has been very similar as we moved to our land and began to build. Also our first two years of marriage had been spent in transit with no roots.    We built our kiln first, and lived in a camper trailer, and carried our water in for seven years, until Lily was born, and we had to get more civilized. A lot happened after the birth of our daughter. We got a telephone, running water, and we formed a partnership with another potter, and started a small production pottery.

Help - art supplies needed

I got an email from Denise Morris this morning. She has gotten a request for help with obtaining art supplies for a student at Anoka Ramsey. This student is a neighbor of potter Bob Briscoe who lives down by Harris, MN.

Being the soft-hearted person she is, Denise asked if we could post the supplies list here on the blog to see if any of you might have some of the needed items laying around no longer in use. So if you have any of these items that you no longer use and would like to donate them to an art student, please let Denise know. The Vasaloppet Art Show was visited by approximately 450 visitors this past weekend. That is a record!!! Highlights included a gallery tour by Ann Klefstad of Duluth on Friday evening and a caricature drawing demonstration on Saturday by Erica Belkholm. David Waid, a local jeweler, demonstrated stone polishing on Sunday.

Visitors voted on their favorite works of art in several categories.

Well the 2010 Vasaloppet Art show is history now and we're all exhausted. I am unable to upload my files right now so I've invited Dee Kotaska to help out with photos of the show.

She can fill us in on the results of the viewer's survey, the door prize winners and attendance records.

FYI, ALL current KCAA members are welcome to post to this blog! If you've got photos to share or announcements to make, just send me an email or make a comment here and I'll send you an invitation to become an author here.

I think this will be a great way to enhance communication and share our news between meetings and the quarterly newsletters.

Vasaloppet Art Show in the News

The Vasaloppet Art Show opened today at 2:00 p.m. and will run through 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
We had 42 artists entered and about 150 pieces of work. The show looks great.

Jay Corn of the Kanabec County Times came to see the show this afternoon and took some video footage of the work in the show. Barb Dreyer and I also did short interviews in the video.

Getting ready for the show

All the Vasaloppet Art Show entries are in now and we have 40 artists signed up to show around 140 pieces of art!

My email and website are working again too. So if you have any questions or need to reach in regard to the work you've entered, I shouldn't have any trouble getting the message.

After I get the title cards done, I'm going to have to buckle down and get my own pieces ready to show. I have a feeling there are lots of you out there in the same boat. :-)

There's Still Time to Enter...

We've had a great response to the call for entries in the Vasaloppet Art Show. I've got 29 artists signed up with 110 pieces of work registered. I'm expecting more entries in the mail today also.
If you missed the postmark deadline yesterday, all is not lost -- give me a call (320-679-4117) and I'm sure we can still get you in.
I'm looking forward to seeing all the work in the show next week!

Now Accepting Art Show Entries

The annual Vasaloppet Art Show, an exhibit of Kanabec County Art Association member work, will take place February 12-14, 2010 at St. Mary's Parish Center, 221 East Forest Ave., Mora, MN. The show is held in conjunction with the Mora Vasaloppet Ski Race which brings in visitors from all over the state, the US, and other countries including Sweden and Japan.
Artists may enter up to five original works of art in a variety of media. There is a registration fee of $20 which includes membership in the KCAA. Complete details of registration can be found on the entry form.
Entries are due Feb. 1, so act now if you're interested in showing your work.
Entry forms are available via email or can be mailed out. Please contact Becky Utecht at: becky at riveroakssheep dot com (remove spaces, etc.) with any questions or to request an entry form.
